Good Morning, Matcha Latte!

I have these spurts when I just drink matcha, it’s usually when I am fresh out of coffee beans to grind, or when I realize I am drinking waaay too much coffee 😀 Recently I’ve been feeling like the latter, and after that matcha mochi donut I haven’t stopped thinking about matcha TBH.

When you buy these matcha lattes at a coffee shop they run you at least $5+, then tack on dairy free milk to it and you’re almost $8 with tax. At that point you’re like, welllppp I could have just bought matcha powder in the first place for way more servings! In this quick recipe I use a culinary grade matcha – there are a ton of reviews out there on what is the best kind to use, but I had this on hand for baking when I was testing out other recipes so I’m using it for my matcha latte as well. I’ll probably stick with it until it’s gone. But you can definitely find other kinds of matcha based on your liking! Plus, good matcha is not very cheap!

You can likely find this brand at any asian grocery

A teaspoon will make a good cup of matcha, you don’t need too much unless you like yours super grassy tasting! Although there are different potencies of matcha out there, it’s really just based on your preference. I also like my teas unsweetened – many of the matcha lattes at shops make them sweet and oftentimes take away the flavor. But if you want to add some sweetness, I prefer to use some honey, and I even top mine with cinnamon (because I personally put cinnamon in a lot of things and brings out a nice earthy flavor).

One important step in making matcha is whisking the fine powder with the hot water. If you don’t whisk this enough, you’ll end up having clumps of matcha and it’s not the most pleasant flavor in your mouth! I have this bamboo whisk I bought from Amazon and it’s served me for several years now. The way they make these is pretty intricate; each whisk is made with one piece of bamboo, specifically to whisk matcha! The prongs make it necessary to froth the matcha and almost thickens it. But, no worries if you don’t have a bamboo whisk, you can easily use a small whisk to blend – although it’s recommended not to use a metal whisk if possible as I’ve researched that it could result in a metallic taste.

If you make the time to make a matcha latte, it’s pretty dang good and worth it. Plus, you’ll feel proud that you saved yourself that $8. Ya welcome! Here’s the quick recipe and video if you feel like making it yourself!
